The majority of babies are born in the head down or vertex presentation, but 3-4% of babies are in the buttocks first or breech position. There are variations of breech positions. For example a baby can be tailor sitting, a baby can have the legs up and have the buttocks be the presenting part, also the baby’s feet can come first, and rarely the baby can be kneeling.
Often reasons to honor the wisdom of a breech baby only become clear after the baby is born (this could be a short cord, placental placement or a baby with a “feet first” personality). Choosing to proceed with a vaginal breech birth at home is an important choice and you should be able to consider all of the information, and risks.
The choice to have a vaginal breech birth at home needs to be made on an individual basis. This depends on risk factors, previous birth history, and assessment of a favorable outcome. We are experienced at attending breech births and can legally attend breech births.
